The Bob is Back

Trust supermodel-of-the-moment Bella Hadid to ignite lust for summer’s hottest hairstyle - yes the bob is back baby. The classic look makes a fashionable return every couple of years according to New York’s top hair stylist and MLD Creative Director, Leon Gorman who says the great news is it’s a style that suits most face shapes.

“There is a real eighties vibe in fashion and beauty and Bella really kicked things off when she showed off her dramatic crop and bangs at the CFDA awards,” says Leon who shared his expert tips for getting the look.  Look out Bella.

Which shape face shape best suits the bob?
“It’s such a classic cut that works for most women, especially those with oval faces.  If you have a long face or square jaw, I’d recommend going a little longer and softening things with some layers at the top.”

What is the ideal length?
“For a lovely shape around the face, half and inch under the chin”.

Are there different ways to work the bob?
“Yes you could go for a short sharp bob that’s all the one length for that Pulp Fiction feel.  Or break it up with a few layers to make the look less bowl like.”

Are bangs a must?
“The bob looks fierce with bangs, but can also look very demure the same length and worn center-parted or swept to one side.”

Does a dramatic cut call for a dramatic color change?
“It’s such a cool geometric style that can look even more fashion-forward in shades of platinum blonde, rose gold or hot chocolate like Bella.  I’d advise lightening things up and creating dimension with balayage in summer and moving into more brunette shades for fall”.

Beauty update:  Bleached brows and blonde

Beauty trends change at lightning speed.  Remember when it was all about darker brows against lighter locks?  Well making the case for bleaching your brows to a barely-there shade (aka much lighter than your hair color) is Georgia May Jagger and fellow IT models.   Time to lighten up?

Fashion Fix:  Best Street Style

The Fall Couture 2017 season has just debuted on the Paris runway. And because not all of us can afford a million dollar Chanel gown (yes some of these bespoke creations have fetched millions) take a fashion tip instead from the impossibly chic women on the street. Here’s Harper’s Bazaar’s round-up of the best street style action

If you’re inspired to go for the chop – Sarah Jessica Parker has just joined Bella and gone for a platinum bob – or fancy a fresh color change, make an appointment at Marie-Lou &D with one of our creative team and receive a $25 discount through July.

The Manhattan Flea Market

Great news for fans of Brooklyn Flea – a Manhattan outpost has set up permanently in Soho/TriBeCa.  Many of the fashion, furnitur and antique vendors you love will now line Watts Street and 6th Avenue every Saturday.  And there’s more excitement for foodies, a Manhattan Smorgasburg will move in just down the road in mid-July.

Curl Crush

The hair stylist behind these gorgeous curls - set to appear in the Italian edition of Elle Magazine - is Marie Lou & D’s very own Creative Director Leon Gorman. If this shot evokes serious curl envy (we can’t blame you), Leon says protect against the humidity frizz factor in summer and show off controlled curls by using the right styling product for your hair. “Wavy hair can create great shape with a curl cream like Kerastase Oléo-Cream which is moisturizing but lightweight. To keep tighter curls in check, use a mousse like Shu Uemura Kaze Wave.” To create curls, get to work with a small curling iron or wand. “Use a setting spray then wrap sections in alternating directions for a natural looking curl. Let the hair cool then shake out from the root and lock things in with a humidity resistant hairspray.” Feeling adventurous? Leon recommends going for a salon perm (yep, they’re back baby) for that free flowing beachy look all year round.

A bold red lip is an instant ticket to glamour. Just ask Lena Durham who has penned an essay for Vogue on the power and allure of red lipstick.  Yes, we can rock a red lip and still be feminists.  And against glowing summer skin this look is sizzling.

Georgia O’Keefe

Don’t miss Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern on now at the Brooklyn Museum. The exhibition celebrates the life, style and iconic artworks by the woman considered the mother of American modernism and one of our most staunch feminists.  Known for her penchant for wearing black, printed headscarves and refusal to confirm to a fashion ideal, O’Keefe’s legacy continues to influence the fashion and art world - perhaps it’s the artists’s signature enlarged flower paintings that have sparked fashion’s current love affair for floralmania.

Check out the Georgia O’Keefe Exhibition until 23 July

 The New Bob

It’s non-stop A-list glamour on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival and at MLD we’re loving that the classic bob has stepped into the spotlight thanks to model of the moment Bella Hadid’s new look. Also showcasing a chic chin-length crop is felllow supermodel Hailey Baldwin and beautiful French actress Marion Cotillard. The best bit about today’s bob is you can wear it super sleek (hello flat iron), sexy and textured (just add serum) or show off vintage style curls or waves.  “The bob never goes out of style because it looks great on women of all ages, hair colors and textures.  Right now you can give it a modern update with different styling techniques including messy up-do’s,” says Marie-Lou & D Creative Director Leon Gorman.

Sexy Natural Waves On the runway right now, designers and luxury brands are showcasing their Resort 2018 collections (the clothes you need to bridge the gap between Fall/Winter and Spring Summer).  But at Marie-Lou & D our eyes were on the hair (as well as those winged eyes) at Louis Vuitton’s epic show in Japan. “There is definitely a very modern, natural, wavy vibe around but the direction for hair this season is really a melting pot. There’s a feeling of freedom, self-expression and anything goes” says Leon Gorman, our new Creative Director who regularly works his magic for Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire. Courtney Love drops into Marie-Lou & D Courtney Love dropped into our salon last Saturday on the recommendation of a friend at Vogue and we can report those infamous platinum locks are now a demure shade of honey.  “I used mousse to give her hair texture, brushed it out then gave her a blow-out.  The look was tousled and wavy with a hint of rock and roll. She’s really sweet and very chilled,” says Leon. Visit MLD to enjoy your salon or beauty experience with our expert stylists & colorists.

Sexy Natural Waves

On the runway right now, designers and luxury brands are showcasing their Resort 2018 collections (the clothes you need to bridge the gap between Fall/Winter and Spring Summer).

Hair Color Contouring The hot hair trend of the moment says Marie-Lou &D stylist Katie Murphy is “Color contouring which like make-up contouring brings out the best of your facial bone structure.” An extension of balayage - painting on highlights to give a natural graduated look - the contouring technique is done by adding highlights to lighten and low-lights to create shadows and give the illusion of a more defined face shape.  Now if that’s not a trend to get excited about we don’t know what is.  For all the latest hair trends check out Marie-Lou & D on Pure Wow.
